About Me

Hi I'm Emma. I live in Bushey Heath, Hertfordshire with my very supportive husband and 15 year old girl/boy twins.

I have always loved being around babies and my desire to support others with their new arrivals began after my own experience of starting a family.

When my children were born after a very stressful pregnancy I was incredibly lucky, for the first few weeks after returning home from hospital, to have a wonderful maternity nurse. She listened to me, supported me and my family, and gave me the confidence I needed to be the mother that I wanted to be.

I have always wanted to help other parents gain the confidence they need to make informed choices and to be a listening ear to their concerns at such an important time in their lives.

After many years working in event planning, which taught me to remain calm under pressure whilst working with a variety of people, I took time out to be a full time mum. I decided during lockdown that now was the time to fulfil my dream.

I have trained with Younique Postnatal and have completed the following courses:

Postnatal Planning Workshop - June 2020

Initial Doula Preparation Course - July 2020

Twins & More - February 2021

Understanding Newborns - March 2021

I am fully insured and CRB checked.

How can I help you as a Postnatal Doula?

'Doula' is a Greek word meaning 'woman servant' or 'caregiver'. A Postnatal Doula is someone who is there to 'mother the mother' by providing support both physically and emotionally in the weeks after a baby is born and this time is often referred to as the 'fourth trimester'.

I always feel extremely privileged to enter someone’s home when they are at their most vulnerable. My role is to support not only mum, but the whole family, to help them acclimatise to this life changing experience. There are so many emotions swirling around at this time - love, excitement, joy, often mixed with exhaustion, anxiety and trepidation.

I believe no two families are the same, so my support may differ for each family, but I am essentially here to:
  • listen in confidence to your fears, ideas & concerns
  • offer you non-judgmental support
  • provide you with reassurance
  • assist with feeding
  • ensure you rest and take care of yourself
  • point you in the right direction if I think you may need extra support or medical help
  • provide companionship
  • accompany you to appointments
I am also willing to do light household chores, e.g. emptying the dishwasher, wiping kitchen surfaces, making a cup of tea and preparing light refreshments etc...

My role is varied, but think of me as a trustworthy ally as you embark on this wonderful new journey.

I offer a free initial consultation before baby arrives so you can feel comfortable and confident with my services.

I also offer a postnatal planning session to help you envisage, understand and plan for what your life might look like when you bring your precious new arrival home.

I cover North London, Southern Hertfordshire, and surrounding areas.

Testimonials

I have known Emma for some 14 years after being her maternity nurse for her then newborn Twins. We have been like family but more like sisters since then and I have been honoured to have always been included in all the family milestones and celebrations.

I was delighted to learn of Emma’s passion for becoming a Doula and it was in this context I called on her as an emergency when I finished a 10 week twins job in London and my replacement text in sick that very morning, leaving the babies single Mum in a state of panic. Emma bless her out of the goodness of her heart drove down to join Sarah for the bedtime feed. This was unpaid and going into a household with a person she had never met.

This sums Emma up as to what a wonderful compassionate heart she has.

Please contact me at any time for a verbal reference.

After the birth of my twins, I had a live in maternity nurse for several weeks, and I was then supposed to smoothly transition to a day time maternity nurse as I returned to work. Alas, due to illness, she was unable to start as scheduled, and I found this out the day she was supposed to start. Thus I found myself completely alone (I am a single mother, and my family couldn't come to the UK to support due to Covid 19 travel restrictions), with no back up, two tiny infants, in an Airbnb (Covid situation again), the babies sensed their first maternity nurse had suddenly vanished and could feel a change in the environment and were acting up accordingly.  It was a meltdown moment that seemed quite scary at the time, but then Emma arrived! She came over for my first evening alone with the twins and helped me feed them, settle them, and get them to bed.  It was a lifeline.  It made what seemed an insurmountable task suddenly seem bearable, just knowing there was someone else there to help made a tremendous difference. The fact that Emma is herself a twin mother was reassuring - she had been in my shoes herself and survived, so surely I could too.  Emma only spent an evening with me, but it made a difference that far outweighed the time spent.

Having Emma once we got home from hospital was a huge help. She was so warm and comforting, a very calm presence for myself, new born baby and toddler. It was invaluable having an extra pair of hands to help with cooking, general house upkeep, feeding and all the advice she offered along the way. We couldn't have got through those first tough six weeks without her.
